|Participation -> Volunteering||Message format|
|Hi there, thanks for checking us out, if you've got a minute I'd like to talk with you about what it is to be a Sacred Lands volunteer. My name is Doug, I'm a member of the Board and used to be the volunteer coordinator. Though I'm still helping Erik out with that where ever I can, kind of like the assistant coordinator. I've been here since the beginning and a member of the Board for 5+ years now. Over the years, I've met many interesting people and a lot of friends. Though some have moved on in their lives, wether it be to other places or states of being, they have and will continue to be endeared to us as I hope we are to them. I say them because this would take way more than a minute if I were to list them all . |
As I'm sitting here thinking about all the things I'd like to tell you, and I'm quickly realizing that I could write a short (or long) story and still not cover it all. So I'll get to the point and try to be brief. Volunteering at sacred Lands is a bit like being part of a family, depending of coarse on what kind of family your use to . Having an event here is kind of like going over to a brothers or sisters house for a get together and inviting the neighbors, well alright maybe more like the whole neighborhood. You might go over to help get the place ready, or help out with the food and drinks, maybe help someone find a parking place if needed, even greet people at the door and welcome them in, then for the most part you kick back and enjoy the evening, and of corse you might stick around after and help clean up. The one exception I can think of is that we have a information/merchandise table at each event. (Though think about that for a moment, Imagine it from the neighbors perspective,wouldn't that be cool. where you go to your neighbors house for a party and they gave you a flyer or brochure explaining their family and what's going on. Like my brother is doing this on wednesday, my sister having that next week, thats my uncle who's been out and about, oh yes and thats the crazy cousin (harmless just don't encourage em). Though in all fairness I don't believe we (Sacred Lands) have a crazy cousin. In less of corse it's me, gosh I hope it isn't me . ) Other than the goofy part at the end here, thats Event Staffing in a nutshell.
Plus there are many other opportunities, in gardening and horticulture, event planning, grant research and writing, maintenance and infrastructure, and for those who would like to get even more involved there currently are openings on the board it self.
Also we are a 501c3 not for profit, meaning we are nationally recognized by the federal government. And we meet all criteria for collage internship programs in a wide variety of subjects.
We happily accept help from all ages and skill levels with a willingness to help with anywhere from one single event to the whole season and anywhere between.
Now on to the perks
On top of the immense amount of fun we have, the incredibly interesting people we meet, the great friendships that are formed, the satisfaction and rewarding feelings that come from contributing to the community at large, the opportunity to take part in rare and unusual experiences, plus many more, on top of all that. When you volunteer at an event, obviously there's no admission cost but we feed you also. And at the end of the season (sep. - may) we always have our Appreciation Party. Which includes diner, a band, raffles - prizes, games - prizes where we drink and dine, dance and laugh, and have as much fun as is humanly possible. This is a private party for all the friends and family (contributors and volunteers) from the past season. Plus a few other things for those who go above and beyond.
The bottom line
The bottom line is this, each season the quantity and quality of events on the schedule is dictated by the available staff. Each season we (the event planning committee and board) put together a fairly full schedule, however if we can't staff them all we are forced to drop some of it. So you see, we not only want you but need you as well. We are very much a community that is for the people by the people.
Also as I pointed earlier I've been here since the beginning, and have been a staffer at at least 95% of every event we've had. I have and will continue to advocate the importance of not over taxing those of you who so generously give your time and effort beyond what you have offered.
Very soon I will be getting with David (our very generous web guy) and put up a online form for volunteering but for know you can email me at email@example.com with your info. Please include name, phone #, email, any specific interests, and I will let you know when we are having the next orientation meeting.
If you have volunteered in the past please add a comment, give your take on this
The final word
We like to think of ourselves as Human Beings - Being Human
